About

Frances Kandl began playing piano at age five and specializes in gypsy schmalz.

She studied English literature and music at U.C. Berkeley, attended the Sorbonne, and later participated in the master’s of music education program at Holy Names College.

Frances taught music and founded the special choral and instrumental programs at Black Pine Circle School, where she served as director.

Her musical works included Cantabile (a sight-singing and ear-training book for children), Musical Maxims (a collection of rounds and canons based on proverbs), and Myoptika.

She was influenced musically by her father’s soulful violin and her mother’s vibrant soprano.
